School Closure - snow 5th January 2010

We felt the safest option today (5th Jan) was to shut the school at lunchtime, in common with other schools in the area.

As more snow is forecast in the coming 24 hours, we advise parents to make a decision depending upon the situation in their locality because circumstances vary quite significantly within our catchment area. The essential element to bear in mind is not the pupil's ability to get into school but the return at the end of the day.

Staff, too, are subject to the same weather conditions and their absence affects the school's ability to function and take care of those pupils who do come into school.

We will keep you informed on this website and at least some staff will be here tomorrow morning. Please make the best informed and common sense decision for your particular area.

Convent Lane proved to be very tricky to negotiate this morning, so please drop children off at the top of the senior school drive and let them come by foot into school. This applies to both junior and senior school pupils.

The School will be closed on Wednesday 6th Jan. 6th January 2010

Due to continued bad weather and treacherous conditions on the roads, the decision has been made to close the school on the 6th of January.

This website will continue to give updates on the situation.

St Gerard's School will be open Thursday 7th Jan 7th January 2010

St Gerard's School hopes to function as normal Thursday, 7th of January.

Parents must however judge the conditions in their locality and consider the age and independence of the child. The essential element to bear in mind is not just the pupil's ability to get into school but the return at the end of the day.

This is a very important meeting for parents to attend, it is the last yr 11 parents evening before their GCSE exams.

School Eco Garden Project 15th June 2010

Pupils will shortly be bringing home a letter regarding this new project in school, whereby a small section of land is being transformed into an eco-garden. The project will involve pupils from KS2 and KS3 (Yrs 5-9. A copy of the letter will be placed on the website during this week.

Eco Garden Project 16th June 2010

Dear Parent/ Guardian,

We are in the process of attempting to develop a small parcel of school land into a garden. Our aim is to develop this area for the benefit of pupils both in the senior and junior schools.

It is hoped that in time we will be able to achieve Eco-school status.

Pupils will be encouraged to participate in a variety of activities over time, including designing, planning and maintaining the garden, the growing of vegetables and other plants, the monitoring/ recording of weather and biodiversity.

In addition, we will encourage pupils to be vigilant in their usage of energy, water and paper throughout the school buildings.

This will predominantly be a self funding exercise and as result we would ask for your support in whatever way you feel able.

This could manifest itself for instance in the supply of old, unwanted gardening tools such as spades, forks, hoes, trowels and such like, or the supply of vegetable seeds, top soil or gravel or even expertise and advice.

We believe that the benefits of this exercise are numerous and they will complement many aspects of the curriculum especially in science and geography at KS2 and KS3.

Over the coming weeks we will be having activities such as auctions, cake sales and book sales in order to build up a fund for the garden.

Again if you have items that may be sold, we would welcome your contributions.

Your son/ daughter will be notified of forthcoming events

In anticipation of your support we would like to thank you in advance.

Yours faithfully

Paul Hanlon Nicola Hawley
Head of Science Head of Geography

Year Book 14th September 2010

The Year Book is now available for purchase from the school office. Those who pre-ordered should collect and sign for them. There are plenty of copies for those who have yet to decided to buy one. Inside each is a DVD of last year's sporting activities, courtesy of the PE department. The Year Book project came to fruition due to some dedicated work on the part of senior members of staff. It has a section for alumni and we hope that this section will grow as we hear more and more from our past pupils.

Mail to Parents 14th September 2010

Today, a letter has gone home to parents to seek an update on information held by the school relating to individual students' health issues. There is also a request for parents regarding the use of photographic images of students. Please look out for the letter in school bags and return this information as soon as possible.

The Nomads 14th September 2010

As readers of the Year Book will have seen, there is a small group of creative writers under the auspices of the English department which meets regularly. Today, the group was visited by an ex-pupil, Robert Jones, who has just begun his final year of an Honours Degree in Creative Writing at the University of Aberystywyth, where he is on a scholarship. He was delighted to answers their questions about their writing and his, and to encourage them in their endeavours.

Harvest Appeal 14th September 2010

On Wednesday 22nd September, in the Senior School, a bring and buy sale will be held in aid of the current appeal for the victims of the Pakistan floods. It is also an opportunity for people to bring in useful items to support the Homeless Shelter here in Bangor. A letter has gone out to families about this and we are hoping for high levels of support as usual.
