Eco Garden Project

16th June, 2010

Eco Garden Project (enlarge photo)

Dear Parent/ Guardian,

We are in the process of attempting to develop a small parcel of school land into a garden. Our aim is to develop this area for the benefit of pupils both in the senior and junior schools.

It is hoped that in time we will be able to achieve Eco-school status.

Pupils will be encouraged to participate in a variety of activities over time, including designing, planning and maintaining the garden, the growing of vegetables and other plants, the monitoring/ recording of weather and biodiversity.

In addition, we will encourage pupils to be vigilant in their usage of energy, water and paper throughout the school buildings.

This will predominantly be a self funding exercise and as result we would ask for your support in whatever way you feel able.

This could manifest itself for instance in the supply of old, unwanted gardening tools such as spades, forks, hoes, trowels and such like, or the supply of vegetable seeds, top soil or gravel or even expertise and advice.

We believe that the benefits of this exercise are numerous and they will complement many aspects of the curriculum especially in science and geography at KS2 and KS3.

Over the coming weeks we will be having activities such as auctions, cake sales and book sales in order to build up a fund for the garden.

Again if you have items that may be sold, we would welcome your contributions.

Your son/ daughter will be notified of forthcoming events

In anticipation of your support we would like to thank you in advance.

Yours faithfully

Paul Hanlon Nicola Hawley Head of Science Head of Geography
